Transmission Electron Microscope (HRTEM 200kV)

  Instrument Details

Make: FEI
Model: TECNAI G2 TF20-ST
Specification: Accelerating voltage 20-200kV
Operating Voltage: 120,200kV
Magnification: 2000X- 1 Million X
Resolution:  Point: 0.24nm, Line: 0.12nm

  Working Principles

TEM images are formed using transmitted electrons (instead of the visible light) which can produce magnification details up to 1 milion times with resolution better than 2.4 Ao. The images can be resolved over a fluorescent screen or on a bottom mount CCD (2k X 2k) in TEM mode, HADDF-STEM detector in STEM mode. Furthermore the analysis of the X-ray produced by the interaction between the accelerated electrons with the sample allows determining the elemental composition of the sample with high spatial resolution (134ev) EDS detector. Transmitted beam through the samples are also used for compositional analysis using very high spatial resolution (0.25eV FWHM) Gatan Imaging Filter (EELS/EFTEM).

  Applications

Nano science/Nano Technology
Micro/Nano electronics
Thin Films
Catalysis
Polymer science
Biological and life sciences

  User Instructions
  1. A Requisition letter addressing In-charge Technical cell along with

    • Demand Draft in favour of S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences.
    • Cash payment after completion of the expt.
    • Payment through Debit/Credit Card
    • Through wire/online fund transfer before the experiment ( see wire transfer details below)
  1. Once your Requisition letter along with DD will be received in Technical Cell, then your appointment will be scheduled as per the queue.
  1. The users will be informed about their date & time of slot by e-mail or phone call (Please provide email and contact details while booking for slot).
  1. The sample can be loaded on carbon coated Copper grid or can be made in disc form, 3mm diameter, with a thinned (electron transparency: less than 200nm thin) central area.
  1. It is most desirable that the user is present in the TEM lab at the time of appointment for better utilization of the facility.
  1. If you are not supposed to be present at the time of appointment please mention as much details as possible like
          a. Expected features you are looking for. (If available send a representative picture also)
          b. Up to what magnification images you want and what modes you would like to use (TEM, HRTEM, SAED, EDS etc.)
          c. About nature of your sample like whether it is magnetic OR nonmagnetic, crystalline or amorphous and type (nanowire, nanoparticles, film cross-section etc.)
          d. If it needs to be dispersed in any solvent (for powdered sample).
(If required attach a separate sheet.)
  2.  Once your Requisition letter along with DD will be received in Technical Cell then only you can be given an idea of tentative date of appointment.
  1. The samples should be dry and should withstand high vacuum (~ 10 -6Pa). and high keV (120 or 200).
  1. Wet biological sample can’t be done in FEG-TEM
  1. Please send or submit Sample Details Form along with requisition letter and DD (Click here to download Sample Details Form  (Hyperlink to HRTEM form)
