: Two-dimensional Phosphorene with Multi-dimensional Promise

Abstract: Although graphene has manifested a lot of exciting science over the last decade, it failed to keep its promise toward many applications. This is mainly due to the non-existing band gap. In this regard, another 2D material, phosphorene with a semiconducting gap and very high carrier mobility together, has attracted a lot of attention in last couple of years. In this talk, I will introduce this material, and discuss its various potential applications with a special mention to spintronics. I will track the properties of point-defect and transition-metal complexes to provide a rational design for phosphorene based spintronic material. I will also discuss several exotic physics that are already predicted/observed in phosphorene, such as engineering Kondo state, prediction of topological insulating state, and the observation of Dirac semimetal state.
