The Library of S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences was established since the inception of the Centre i.e. 1986. The library was developed to serve its readers engaged in higher studies and research in basic sciences. The library has a collection of more than 13000 books and online access of a large number of reputed journals. The library is enriched with an excellent collection in the fields of Theoretical Physics, Astrophysics, Quantum Mechanics, Solid State Physics, Optics, Particle Physics, Mechanics, Electronics, Laser, Chemical Biology, Material Science, Nanoscience and Technology, Computer Science, Mathematics, etc. Library has also a good collection of Reference documents, Fiction and books on general interests.
It is primarily intended for the faculty, staff members, consultants, scholars, students of S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences. However, outside users viz., professionals, bona fide research scholars, bona fide students, etc. also make use of the library. It has resource sharing arrangements with other similar organizations.
The working hours of the Library starts from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM except Sundays and Holidays. However, reading facility is available from 9.00 AM to 12 at night (Saturday 9.00 AM to 8.00 PM).

Library provides reading facility to its members as well as outside visitors. All the books including reference collections are classified (DDC) and are open-accessed.
Each member is entitled to issue 6 books and 2 bound volumes of journals at a time.
Reference service is provided via e-mail, telephone or personal interaction with the help of different reference tools like encyclopedias, directories, dictionaries, yearbooks, web of science, annual report etc.
Library offers Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) which allows user to browse library collection by author, title, subject, classification number, etc. through web OPAC.
Library is well equipped with sufficient number of computers with internet connectivity through cable LAN and wireless networking facility for laptop users. Library is having access to plenty of electronic journals, databases, archives at institutional level and through National Knowledge Resource Consortium (NKRC). Online journals and databases are also accessible within the campus through campus LAN.
Library has an open accessed institutional digital repository with multiway searching facility. It is enriched with pre-published version of the published research papers of the S.N. Bose Centre.
Library has different types of printers including a poster printer, photocopy machine, scanner, lamination and spiral binding machine to provide better and quick service to library usres.
Library has a separate Audio-Visual Room for watching multimedia presentation, video lectures, documentaries etc. The room is also equipped with projector, screen, white board and sitting arrangements. The room is also used as a discussion room for teachers and students.
Library has separate sections for fictions, newspapers and popular magazines. 13 daily Newspapers in different languages are subscribed and displayed in the library. Some popular magazines are kept in a reading space in the library premises. In the Fiction section, Books on Bengali, Hindi, and English literature, classic literature, novel, history, books on general interest etc. are arranged.
Library helps to prepare various bibliometric reports specially usage statistics, citation analysis, h-index, Impact factor of Journals etc. as per users' request.
The library shares its resources with all important academic/research institutions in India. As a member of National Knowledge Resource Consortium (NKRC), the library keeps close contacts with libraries under DST and CSIR. SNB library has institutional membership in the British Council Library (BCL), Kolkata.
Library conducts Book Exhibitions within the Centre's campus for selection of useful books for the library. Book suppliers attend the exhibition with their variety of publications.
